In this episode, Josh continues the conversation with George Shaffer about 7 Key Leadership Skills every church leader should develop or strengthen. George is a leadership coach with 35 years of experience (20 years with AT&T and 15 years at the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia) and has also served in church leadership.

We discuss the following leadership skills:

#4 Create a Climate for Ministry Success (Ephesians 4:15-16)

Key Question: Is your church culture changing you, or are you changing your church culture? If God has called you to your church, your church’s culture is your responsibility. You get the behaviors that you tolerate.

Key Thought: Leaders are mentors. Are you being the mentor that your church needs?

#5 Think Strategically (Genesis 41:49, 53-57)

Key Thought: Josh shares that one of his greatest fears is not failure but rather succeeding at the wrong thing. George stresses that strategic planning must be followed by decisive action.

#6 Cast and Inspire a Shared Vision (Nehemiah 2:18)

Key Thought: George points out that we often think of someone opposing “our” vision for the church. We should focus instead casting God’s vision for the Church and asking people to join us in that vision.

#7 Transform Vision into Results (Acts 11:25-26)

Key thoughts: Don’t focus on the number of events on the calendar. Rather, measure ministry success by actual impact in people’s lives and in the life of your community.
